Back Pain? A New Mattress Can Help

There are many things that can cause back pain. From medical conditions to injuries, to an unhealthy or sedentary lifestyle, to bad posture or bad ergonomics. It can be very difficult for some people to get comfortable when they are experiencing any of these conditions. However, if your mattress is old, worn out, or just no longer comfortable, it may also be getting in the way of a comfortable night’s sleep.
You spend about one-third of your life sleeping. Needless to say, a good night’s sleep can make a big difference. Whether you’re young or old, choosing the right mattress can help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and help ensure you stay comfortable all night long. It may also help prevent and alleviate back pain. If you’re in the market for a new mattress, look to the large selection available at Wayside Furniture & Mattress in northeast Ohio. Here, we’ll explore how mattresses impact your health and how to choose the best mattress for back pain.
How Do Mattresses Affect Your Back?
When you sleep well, your body can fully relax. This includes the muscles around your spine, and the back ligaments, discs, and joints. Whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, this extended period of inactivity can help rejuvenate your body. However, if you’re sleeping on the wrong mattress, you may find it does more harm than good. This is because it may leave your body in an uncomfortable or even vulnerable position while you sleep.
The need for mattresses that offer support for back pain is on the rise. According to Retail Edge, recent statistics show a large increase in online search queries related to back pain, including a 78% increase in the number of searches for “best mattress for back pain.” There was also a 295% increase in the number of searches for “doctor-recommended mattress for back pain.”
Modern mattresses are designed with these thoughts in mind. Some of the most popular names in the industry have engineered mattresses with zonal support, customized settings, specialized cushioning, and other advancements to help sleepers who suffer from back pain.
What Features Should You Look for to Alleviate Back Pain?
If you are dealing with back pain or have dealt with it in the past, there’s a good chance you have overlooked your mattress as a possible culprit. Fortunately, today’s mattresses offer a wide selection of features that can help with back pain, including:
Medium Firmness
Studies have shown that if a mattress is too soft, it may not keep your spine properly aligned, while one that is too firm may make sleep uncomfortable for those dealing with back issues. A medium-firm mattress delivers the right amount of support without putting too much pressure on your body.
Types of Foam
Different comfort layers or features in a mattress have different feels because—as humans— we all have different comfort preferences and needs. One major component that influences the feel of a mattress is the foam used inside of it.
Memory Foam - Foam that can conform to the contours of your body is a no-brainer for those who wish to alleviate aches and pains associated with unsupportive mattresses. Not only does this material offer pressure-relieving cushioning, but it does so while still providing the structure and support you need.
Latex Foam - If you prefer a firmer feel on your mattress, latex foam may be right for you. This supportive foam is highly durable, hypoallergenic, and responsive to instantly react to your movements. Made from naturally-derived materials, it’s also ideal for temperature regulation during hot summer months or cold winters.
Gel Foam - Gel foam mattresses offer the pressure-relieving properties of memory foam along with the cooling benefits of gel. The gel is often in the form of beads or swirls and works to draw heat away from the body, making it ideal for hot sleepers. However, gel foam can also be ideal for individuals with aches and pains who need pressure relief.
Edge Support
This advancement is helpful for older people or those who manage life with chronic back pain. The design helps those who struggle to get in and out of bed. Different mattress manufacturers reinforce the edge of the mattress using different materials and techniques, some more resilient than others. If you’d like to learn more about this, ask your salesperson about this feature during your search!
Beyond the Mattress: Adjustable Bases
The support system beneath your mattress can sometimes be as influential as the mattress itself. Choosing an adjustable base offers many possible benefits, including enhanced comfort, better sleep quality, improved circulation, and pain relief from back and joint pain. They can be easier to get in and out of, and may help ease insomnia, acid reflux, and snoring as well.
These changes may help you feel better overall, but ultimately, comfort is very subjective. What’s comfortable for someone else may not be comfortable for you. It is very important to test different mattresses and their features to best gauge what will work best for YOU.
Find the Mattress Brands You Can Trust
Because of the correlation between a great mattress and back pain relief, sufferers should do their research to find an ideal option to replace their old or unsupportive mattress. It is always best to test a mattress before you buy it. At Wayside Furniture & Mattress, our furniture store offers an elite selection of mattresses at every price point from the brands you know and love.
This includes names like Tempur-Pedic, which uses proprietary TEMPUR-Material to help deliver a deeply comfortable sleep, with extra conforming foam that supports you where you need it most. We also offer Serta, whose mattresses feature a coil density system with special zones for targeted relief. Another favorite brand is Stearns & Foster, whose offerings include those with a mix of memory foam and innerspring, as well as those with cooling technology, allowing users to nod off quickly even on hot nights. White Dove, produced locally in Cleveland, also offers high-quality mattresses that are made from premium materials. White Dove mattresses utilize skilled craftsmanship to create mattresses that are long-lasting and comfortable. Beautyrest Black also offers premium mattresses with an incredibly luxurious feel. Selecting a new mattress is an important decision. Wayside wants to help make it stress-free by offering our 120-Night Comfort Assurance on premium bedding brands* so you can buy with confidence.
Your new mattress can be like new jeans or shoes; they can take a while to get comfortable and they will show comfort zones. We encourage you to sleep on it for a minimum of 30 nights to allow for this adjustment period. However, in the event that you are not comfortable within 120 days of your original purchase, we will do our best to match you to one that is comfortable. You may re-select or return your mattress one time with a $120 handling charge (plus transport fees) which helps defray the costs of sanitation for donation or recycling. Returned mattresses must be clean and stain-free. Our mattress protectors come with a guarantee against staining. Standard mattress pads purchased at department stores, etc. do not offer free mattress replacement if you get a stain that cannot be removed. Wayside highly recommends purchasing our warranted mattress pad to help protect your mattress.
If one of the premium mattresses is out of budget, we also offer simple bed-in-a-box options. At these prices, they are not eligible for our comfort assurance warranty. However, you can still try them out in our showroom before you purchase one to make sure you’re confident with your decision!
